Utetezi Rural Africa (URA) is a queer feminist rural-based organization founded in 2022. We aim to amplify the voices of lesbian, bisexual, queer women, transgender, and intersex persons (LBQTI) in rural areas, focusing on their social and economic development. Our work is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves equal rights and opportunities, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Our Mission

Our mission is to contribute to the achievement of SDG 3: Promoting good health and well-being through strategic partnerships and rights-holder empowerment. We strive to create safe spaces for queer individuals in rural communities, ensuring access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. Our approach is guided by Human Rights and African feminist principles, advocating for systemic change and social justice.

To ensure lesbian, bisexual, queer women and intersex persons (LBQI) in rural areas are at the forefront of advocating for their sexual and reproductive justice at national, regional and international spaces.

To advocate for the rights of lesbian, bisexual, queer women and intersex persons (LBQI) in rural communities, amplify their voices, enable access to sexual and reproductive rights and mental health through progressive policy reforms and social economic empowerment.

Our Pride Stories

As a lesbian, I spent years hiding who I truly was, afraid of the judgement and discrimination I might face. But once I found the courage to come out, I realized how much love and support there was out there for me. Being part of the LGBTQ+ community has given me a sense of belonging and pride that I never knew was possible.

Identifying as bisexual can be confusing and isolating at times, but I know I’m not alone. Finding a community of other bisexual people has helped me feel seen and heard, and has given me the confidence to own my identity.

As a queer woman, I’ve faced discrimination and ignorance from people who don’t understand or accept me. But I refuse to let their hate bring me down. I’m proud of who I am, and I’ll continue to fight for LGBTQ+ rights and visibility.

Being intersex is a part of my identity that I used to feel ashamed of. But once I discovered the intersex community, I found a sense of pride and belonging that I never knew was possible. I know I’m not alone, and that there are people out there who accept and celebrate me for who I am.

Being part of the LGBTQ+ community has taught me the importance of diversity and inclusion. We come from all walks of life, and yet we share a common bond. It’s a powerful thing, and I feel grateful to be a part of it.

As a lesbian couple, my partner and I have faced our fair share of challenges. But we’ve also experienced so much love and acceptance from our friends and family. We know that we’re not alone, and that there are countless other LGBTQ+ couples out there who are just as happy and fulfilled as we are.
